Mid November I was bored of little details on my Airport and needed a new Big Project, something to do while waiting for inspiration to start my Cathedral. This was a few days before the CFL's Grey Cup. So despite not being much of a football fan, I decided to build a Football Stadium.
Yes, I know, That sounds insane... But Anyone who has seen my other projects will know that Insanely large is the scale I prefer for my creations in Minecraft. It's very simple really, with the blocks so large, it's the Larger you go, the more detail you can add.
So when I decided to build a Football Stadium, Naturally I picked a Canadian Football Field. In order to make it as realistic as possible, I decided to go with a 1 block = 1 foot scale. This allowed for 3 blocks to a Meter instead of the default of 1 block = 1 Meter.
So first off, I had to figure out my full dimensions to know what size map I would need, So I loaded my 512 Map Template with Ruler allready built and quickly measured out the dimensions shown above. then I flew around it for a bit and imagined what I was going to build. From what I saw, I knew my 512 map wasn't going to cut it, so I generated a 1024L x 512W x 256H flat map and proceeded to copy my ruler and first sketch of the field.
I then measured out and made a single 5 yard section of the grid and adjusted it to my liking.
Sticking with my scale, every third block was a yard marker, and while the lines on an actual field aren't a foot wide, all in all, it turned out quite well.
I then copied the first section and laid out the rest of the field. It did end up being larger than my initial estimate but I was pretty close. I finished up with the Endzones and then added the yardage numbers.
For ease of movement I raised the section of ruler above the grid iron.
Next off was to center it where I wanted my stadium and decide on depth.
On to Step 2!
